XP-720: New Multi-Turn Pots

One of the recommended mods for Elenco’s XP-720 Power Supply is to replace the single-turn 2K potentiometers with equivalent multi-turn ones for finer control of the output voltages.

I think it’s a good idea as not only do you get finer control but if a dial gets turned by mistake there will be much less of a voltage spike. The slight negative is having to crank on the dials to get to the desired voltage and not being able to mark on the panel positions of specific voltages.

People have had good results with these 10 turn pots from CNBTR on Amazon:

You will need to get new knobs, with set screws, to go with the round 1/4″ shafts of the potentiometers. I got mine from Jameco. The original dials will not work with these new pots.

[Just found a listing that includes knobs for the same price: Taiss / 2pcs 3590S 10-Turn Rotary]

Installing the pots was straight forward. Even with wider shafts they still fit through the front panel holes so no drilling required.

However, the shafts are also longer and cause the dials to stick quite far out from the panel surface, as you can see here:

Not really a problem but aesthetically not nice.

Managed to make them more flush using some thick washers on the inside:

A very simple and inexpensive mod. Highly recommended.
